As international students and members of a marginalized group, we experience a deep and urgent desire to express ourselves. Immersed in a cutthroat job market, we’ve endured prolonged internship periods, overwhelming workloads, and unforgiving hiring standards. Yet, despite our efforts, visa restrictions have made job transitions difficult, often resulting in long-term underpayment and undervaluation of our labor.
Still, many of us work hard, quietly contributing to the life of this city. But because of the temporary nature of our immigration status, our presence often disappears without a trace—unrecorded and unnoticed.
作為國際學生,作為這個邊緣群體的一部分,我們深切感受到一種強烈的表達渴望。身處激烈的求職市場中,我們經歷了漫長的實習期、沉重的工作負擔、以及嚴苛的錄用標準。然而,即使付出努力,我們仍因簽證限制所帶來的就業轉換困難而不被公平對待。
即便如此,這群人在這座城市中努力貢獻、默默耕耘,但由於身份的短暫性,他們的存在常常悄然消逝,無人記錄。

We chose to begin this project with a seemingly ordinary object: the now-defunct San Francisco Examiner newspaper boxes. Once carriers of public information, these urban relics have been transformed into vessels for our own “classified ads,” designed based on real experiences. Through humor and absurdity, these ads reveal the reality of how marginalized identities are devalued, forced to sell labor in order to survive.
This repurposed newspaper box is both a container of stories and an art installation embedded in the fabric of everyday urban life. It collects and presents the often-overlooked voices of international students, short-term workers, and others who exist at the margins of “non-resident alien” identity.
我們選擇使用那些原本已失去使用功能的 San Francisco Examiner 報紙箱作為切入點。這些曾經是公共信息傳播媒介的街頭物件,如今轉化為張貼我們根據真實經歷設計的「小廣告」的載體——這些廣告以幽默、荒誕的形式,揭示了非主流身分者被壓低價值、被迫兜售勞動力的現實。
這個經過改造的報箱,既是一個故事的容器,也是一件介入城市日常空間的藝術裝置。它用來收集並呈現那些經常被忽視的聲音:國際學生、短期勞工,以及其他處於「非居民外籍人士」身份邊緣的群體。
2025 CCA @ CCA Creative Citizens in Action Exhibition
Within the context of an art school exhibition, the box is easily recognized as an art object—a deliberate anomaly. Viewers are drawn in, curious to read what’s inside. But when placed in public space, it returns to the street as a familiar urban object, blending seamlessly into the city's landscape.
This shift in context allows the Non Alien Box to function as both a subtle intervention and a pointed inquiry into visibility and power. It challenges the question: who truly belongs in this city? It is also a way for us to leave our own mark.
在藝術學院的展覽語境中,它作為一件「異物」容易被辨識為藝術裝置,觀眾會主動靠近並閱讀其中內容;但當它被放置在城市的公共空間,它則重新回到街頭,以「普通物件」的姿態融入城市肌理之中。
這種語境的轉換,使得「Non Alien Box」成為一種對可見性與權力結構的質詢,也是一場試圖重新定義「誰才算屬於這座城市」的實踐——更是我們試圖留下痕跡的一種方式。
